This is 6 Incredible Restaurants Built Out of Shipping Containers
Piggybacking off the tiny house and food truck trends, a growing number of eateries are popping up inside shipping containers. Converted into veritable kitchens, the trend doesn?t stop with one type of cuisine. The catch is that these are not merely pop-ups: they?re here to stay?and the surrounding al fresco spaces are part of the design.
DK Puerto Morelos (Puerto Morelos, Mexico)
DK Puerto Morelos (Puerto Morelos, Mexico)
Serving Mexican food in Mexico isn?t unique?but the twist at DK Puerto Morelos, open since 2015, is that the menu is mostly lionfish (an overly invasive fish in this Riviera Maya region); Lionfish tacos, a Thai lionfish dish, and lionfish burgers are three of the options. Tables with umbrellas and chairs out front add pizazz to the largely unaltered shipping container?s forest green hue.
Market 707 (Toronto, Canada)
Market 707 (Toronto, Canada)
What?s cool about Market 707 is that it?s a food-court-like concept with various restaurants, each inside its own recycled shipping container. The focus is on international street foods, including macarons at Petit Nuage, curry at Gushi Japanese Street Food, and Colombian empanadas from Cookie Martinez. Consider a dine-around so you don?t have to choose one vendor.
Wahaca (London, U.K.)
Wahaca (London, U.K.)
Eight shipping containers painted turquoise and canary yellow were seamlessly constructed into one wildly popular Mexican restaurant, spanning two levels. On the menu at Wahaca?s Southbank location are unique street-food bites like fire-roasted cactus and buttermilk chicken as taco ingredients. Sink into a turquoise Acapulco chair on the second level, overlooking the Thames River.
Charcoal Garden Bar + Grill (Miami, Florida)
Charcoal Garden Bar + Grill (Miami, Florida)
Open since the spring, Charcoal?s menu riffs off of the Wynwood District?s edgy, artsy vibe. Cooked daily inside Miami?s only shipping container restaurant is a farm-to-table and local-catch menu, featuring shareable bites like an American Farmstead Cheeses platter, individual casserole dishes, and namesake charcoal-grilled seafood and meats. Spot an herb on the menu? It was likely grown out back.
Federalist Public House (Sacramento, California)
Federalist Public House (Sacramento, California)
Step in to Federalist Public House?s refurbished shipping container on a Friday or Saturday night and this Midtown pizza joint is hopping. Lodi red wines and California craft beers are poured alongside 10 signature pizzas (like the Marshall: crushed pistachios, salami, and arugula pesto) baked in a wood-burning oven. Seating is at communal tables and a bocce-ball court tides you over until your order?s ready.
Mozza & Co. (Paris, France)
Mozza & Co. (Paris, France)
Snug along the Seine?near Mus?e d'Orsay at Port de Solf?rino?is this Italian eatery?s artsiest location yet. Paninis are prepared inside the steely-gray shipping container, paired with Peroni, while plenty of picnic tables and folding deck chairs out front face the river.

Text description provided by the architects. Hai d3 is a development that was conceived to be the incubator space for the development of UAE?s hub for emerging local creative talents, the Dubai Design District. It was meant to be a temporary facility with a 5-year program of use, and an 8-month construction schedule. The complex is intended to welcome a variety of events, exhibitions, collaborative works, and displays to encourage the growth within the different fields of art and design in the Middle East.
The development was designed as a neighborhood, bringing into fact that the masterplan of the whole Dubai Design District was meant to develop a community of artists within the region. Inspired with the efficiency of the traditional Arabic neighborhood planning, the project?s layout was designed to accommodate open spaces, which are further developed into landscaped ?pockets? that serve as courtyards for each of the buildings in the complex. These courtyards not only complement the industrial nature of the architecture, but also promote activity, and consequently, vibrancy to the entirety of the site.
These buildings are formed with the use of recycled 40-foot shipping containers that were crafted with the careful consideration to preserve its raw, industrial form. The use of these shipping containers allow an expeditious build and dismantling process that can be helpful to refabricating the architecture, if deemed necessary. Six different layouts of stacking were implemented, which was formed to directly respond to the space program of the site. Art galleries, a workshop, a library, retail spaces, as well as a cafe and prayer rooms were introduced in the buildings, which were arranged according to the facility?s use. Annex buildings were also introduced in the project, bringing in 20-foot service containers for toilets and storage, as well as an entrance piece that not only welcomes people to the district, but also serves as a multi-function space which artists can use to host movie screenings, gatherings, or outdoor workshops.
Sustainability was key in designing the development, given the green building initiatives within the region. Passive cooling, through shipping containers designed as ?wind towers?, were distributed around the site. These wind towers promote natural ventilation by catching high draft winds and funneling it towards the courtyards in the site. Also, passive lighting was employed in buildings with the use of full-height windows and high sidelights, as abundant sunlight is intrinsic in Dubai. These windows also frame both the landscape on site and the Dubai skyline.
This development, with the use of clean, simple forms, and straightforward but welcoming views, offers its users a platform of flexibility, where they can embrace the dynamism of their work, and in turn, use this as a way to propel the creative industry of the Middle East.
Create your Busines-How To Build Your Own Shipping Container Restaurant
Why shipping containers are the hot new restaurant trend?
I thought that this new popular trend is only for cheaply business in hospitality but I find that the most famous brands like Nike and Starbuck are also poping up their shipping container
Each and every year the list of shipping containers that have been customized to create restaurants, whether pop up or permanent, grows and grows. Sure we?ve written about this topic before, but food is awesome, and shipping containers full of food that is ready for our bellies at lunch time is even more awesome. So let?s have a look at the ultimate guide and learn how to build a shipping container house
It starts by 3 stages: Plan / Design / Execute
PLAN
Establish planning and design goals / Define and evaluate space requirements / Review benchmark standards, codes, and guidelines.
90% Of good architectural design is planning - knowing what you want from your new restaurant, what you can afford budget wise, and what the external factors (site, code, costs, etc..) are.
Preparation is an important part of the design process. As you start to design your shipping container restaurant, the "limitations" brought about by site, code, and budget can serve to inform many of the necessary design decisions along the way. Being aware of these issues and how they could potentially impact (productively or negatively) the design and budget, will keep the design economical and efficient. And buildable!
This is a critical phase where expectations are set, and budget ceilings determined. The primary objective is to establish a conceptual design with input from design professionals, potential contractors, modular suppliers, and material/equipment suppliers.
A comprehensive budget and schedule are also developed so a true profile of scope, budget and risk can be understood and assessed early on.
DESIGN
Develop your design to a level of detail necessary to work out a clear, coordinated description of all aspects of the project. Drive all construction, permitting, and build drawings and documentation. Determine final budget.
EXECUTE
Building a restaurant is no small feet. Even a small one. There are thousands of materials, pieces, and tasks involved. Unless you are a builder or experienced it's intimidating. But, what containers as perfect modules allow you to do, is simplify the entire process. Think of a typical 1,000 square foot. Try and work through in your head the total length of timber for the framing, square footage of sheathing, number of floor joists required, and ceiling rafters. Can't do it. Not too many can. Now think about that 1,000 square foot restaurant made out of shipping containers. It's 3 forty foot containers. By reducing the restaurant into 3 base component pieces (modules), it's much easier to understand, design, and build.
Purchase New, One Trip or Used Containers?
New and ?one-trip? containers are essentially the same thing; one trip containers are used to ship a single cargo load and once they have arrived at their destination they are sold
Clearly the decision of whether to buy new or used containers will most likely come down to your budget, however there are a few points to take into consideration.
New or one trip containers will be in much better condition than used containers so this will make it easier to build with them; they will also have a longer expected lifespan than used containers. In addition the risk of unknown chemical contamination is greatly reduced (most used containers are treated with hazardous chemicals such as pesticides and lead-based paint).
However, you pay the price for this as discussed later on in the blog post under ?How Much Should I Expect To Pay??.
Used containers do offer the advantage of being cheaper than new containers and you can get your hands on them much quicker. However be prepared to expect a few dints and potentially some light rusting.
Where to Buy Your Shipping Container?
The simplest way to purchase a shipping container is to find a reputable local dealer. Green Cube Network has a fantastic search tool to find local dealers; take a look at their tool over at:

If you are still struggling to find a container try using eBay, Gumtree or Alibaba.
http://www.alibaba.com/

Note- when purchasing your containers try to purchase them all from the same manufacturer. Manufacturers have slight variations which could make working with different brand containers difficult.

How Much Should I Expect To Pay?
Clearly this will vary depending on the containers you?ve decided to buy, however we have put some estimates below to give you a rough idea.

HOW TO TACO BELL MAXIMIZES SMALL SPACE WITH SHIPPING-CONTAINER DESIGN
A handful of corrugated metal shipping containers from the Long Beach Shipyard have been resurrected as a first-of-its-kind Taco Bell on a street corner near Los Angeles. If successful, the concept could lead the way for future operations looking for quick construction and maximum profits from a small space.
The pint-size prototype (at 1,000 square feet, it?s about half the size of traditional Taco Bells) first appeared at Austin?s South by Southwest festival in 2015. At SXSW, the prefab taco shop went from ?nothing on the ground to opening and operating for consumers? in three days, says Matt Prince, Taco Bell?s public relations manager.
The process of building the shipping container restaurant?s permanent home in largely industrial South Gate, seven miles southeast of Los Angeles, followed a less-accelerated timeline, given area zoning logistics and first-time glitches with this construction. But Prince is hopeful that future shipping container Taco Bells could pop up more quickly in other well-trafficked urban areas. The chain will wait to asses this unit?s success before planning future shipping container operations, he says.
This unit consists of four full-size shipping containers and one partial container. Two containers are positioned side by side, with the interior walls removed, to create a double-wide area for the restaurant. Another attached container houses the kitchen operations. The fourth shipping container sits atop the others, providing shade for the 38 outdoor seats. Electrical equipment is concealed in the partial container.
It?s run by a longtime franchisee who was especially enthusiastic about the project, Prince says. ?For the very first one, we wanted a good track record,? he says.
There?s no interior seating, but there is a drive-thru, a walk-up window and a few dozen outdoor seats. Chainwide, about 70% of sales come via the drive-thru, Prince says. Plus, Taco Bell?s very first restaurant, which opened in 1962 just a few miles from the South Gate prototype, only had a walk-up window. ?It?s kind of fun to see things come full circle,? he says.

This luxurious and elegant cafe owned by Starbuck is made from a pile of used containers
Hot on the heels of its lavish breakthrough Milan store, Starbucks has opened yet another striking and innovatively-designed coffee house. However, Japanese architect Kengo Kuma's design associates an entirely different mood with the company's coffee beverages.
Starbucks Taiwan the company?s first location in the Asia Pacific, consists of 29 white shipping containers, shifted and stacked in a grid-like formation. Within the containers? 3,444 sqft (320 sqm) of space are a variety of intimate and comfortable spaces. A drive-thru is also incorporated into the design to maximize the store?s convenience to its customers.
Save this picture! Courtesy of Starbucks Courtesy of Starbucks
Kengo Kuma?s vision follows a current trend in Starbucks? store designs as the company has opened over 40 coffee locations in structures that utilize a shipping container as a fundamental building block.
Save this picture! Courtesy of Starbucks Courtesy of Starbucks
At a glance, the container structure looks impenetrable, but Kuma?s design utilizes a series of skylights and single pane windows to allow natural light into the structure, transforming the density and darkness of a shipping container into a pleasant habitable space to enjoy a Starbucks beverage.
Save this picture! Courtesy of Starbucks Courtesy of Starbucks
The distinct placement of the containers for the Kuma design was inspired by the Chinese bucket arch and the leaves and branches of a coffee tree. The bucket arch represents a highly organized architecture structure of stacked beams, while the coffee tree represents the natural order of organic foliage. Kuma also designed Japan?s Fukuoka Starbucks store and the highly anticipated Starbucks Reserve Roastery opening soon in Tokyo.

Utilizing shipping containers has become a common architectural trend, typically used as a statement to highlight the importance of reducing and reusing industrial waste and materials. This project is no different. As part of Starbucks? renewed commitment to sustainable building, the storage container designs can occupy sites that may not be able to accommodate a traditional building due to the terrain or spatial limitations.

Simply Idea Modular Restaurant Construction
Modular construction is becoming an increasingly popular alternative to conventionally built structures. Modular units offer consumers numerous benefits over their traditional stick-framed counterparts: cost savings, eco-friendliness, and a distinctive aesthetic appearance.
Modular construction is a great option for restaurants, diners, and other commercial applications. By choosing to house your business within a modular unit, you can complete your build faster while equipping yourself with a modern, comfortable, and fully customized facility.
Shipping Container Restaurants
At BMarko Structures, we specialize in a wide range of commercial modular buildings, including modular restaurant construction. We fulfill orders to our customers? unique specifications ? we can help you assess your needs and develop the perfect modular design for your restaurant.
Let?s examine a few facets of the modular design and construction process and consider how utilizing a modular unit for your restaurant would make a great choice.
Modular Restaurant Design Process
Each of our modular restaurant components starts with a re-purposed shipping container. Shipping containers are available in a wide range of sizes, but we use a 20? or 40? long unit for most commercial applications. Modular units can be stacked on top of one another or placed side by side for additional floor space.
We work with suppliers around the country to find the right containers for your needs and budget. Generally speaking, any unit can be a candidate for converting to a modular restaurant. While newer containers are more expensive, they require less cleanup time to remove dents, rust and other imperfections.
Benefits of Modular Restaurant Construction
Cost savings
Modular restaurant buildings are an economical choice. Compared to renting or buying an existing property, you?ll get a fully customized facility that doesn?t require expensive retrofitting to accommodate your needs. In addition, when compared to conventional construction processes, modular construction is less expensive. It requires fewer labor hours and material costs as the frame of the unit arrives intact. In addition, modular construction can be completed faster, which means you can be up and running in less time, allowing you to focus on increasing your sales and building your brand. You won?t have to sacrifice any of the comforts of conventional construction with a modular unit, either. You can still outfit the interiors with drywall, top-of-the-line appliances, and the flooring of your choice. You?ll get a restaurant that embodies your unique vision of an excellent dining experience.
Energy efficiency
In a busy restaurant, utility bills make up a large portion of your overhead costs. Any improvements in efficiency translate to considerable savings on a month-to-month basis. With a modular restaurant construction, it?s easy to include high-efficiency appliances, solar panels, insulation and other green technologies. In addition, your choice of a modular unit is an investment in an emerging green building technology: the repurposing of building materials. Choosing to house your restaurant in a modular space keeps perfectly usable material out of landfills and helps encourage consumers to re-use materials in a creative and innovative manner.
Workflow
Modular restaurant construction gives you free reign to design the best kitchen area and front-of-house for your team. Rather than forcing you to use a set floor plan, BMarko?s modular restaurant designs are flexible and modifiable in plenty of convenient ways. Modular buildings are also easy to expand when you need to accommodate future growth. Simply stack a modular addition on top of your existing structure or add a couple on to the side for several hundred extra square feet. It?s an easy and cost-effective way to provide new customers and staff with a comfortable space.
Design
D?cor and design play a large role in how your restaurant is perceived, and the type of crowd it attracts. While BMarko?s modular construction process gives you plenty of options for creating a comfortable, conventional space both inside and out, many clients find the industrial look of a repurposed shipping container to be one of its key selling points. Choose a modular restaurant to give your eatery the edge it needs in a fiercely competitive culinary landscape.
From giving your team the freedom to move to attracting a hip crowd to your restaurant?s unique look, modular construction is a great choice for your establishment!
Shipping Container Coffee Shops & Bars
Customized shipping containers are excellent choices for new coffee shops and hip bars. A recent study conducted by Ohio State University revealed that 60 percent of restaurants fail in their first year of existence and 80 percent fail within five years. As reported by BusinessInsider.com, Robert Irvine, celebrity chef and star of the hit show, ?Restaurant Impossible,? lists the following as the top causes of restaurant failures:
While Carrie Luxem, president and CEO of Restaurant HR Group, agrees with many of the things on Irvine?s list, she considers poor location and overspending to be two of the biggest reasons why restaurants fail. Luxem warns that some of the pitfalls of a bad location include poor visibility, insufficient parking and a lack of foot traffic. When it comes to overspending, Luxem says that some restauranteurs spend too much even before they open their doors on remodeling projects that aren?t always necessary.
Overcoming the reasons Irvine cited as being responsible for failure in the restaurant industry can be done with hands-on training and education. You can get experience by working in someone else?s restaurant before you strike out on your own, for instance, and learn how to prepare food and execute the menu you?re going to offer. You can also learn about the level of service customers expect at the same time, which will help you train your employees to tend to your customers appropriately down the line. You can learn how to manage others by taking a class or consulting with a seasoned mentor. You can also pick up the accounting skills you?ll need to succeed as a business owner by taking a class in a formal setting or online.
Conquering the obstacles to success that Luxem discussed is also within your control. You can research the demographics in a few areas where you?d like to open your restaurant to see which market your establishment will be most likely to succeed in, for example. You can also avoid overspending by identifying the projects that are critical to your success and stay within your budget by not adding unnecessary ones to your to-do list.
Sometimes, no matter how much research you do about the demographics and competition in the area and regardless of how careful you are to stick to your budget, your business may still be literally and figuratively positioned to fail. Often, this is due to a change in the neighborhood, a ?jinxed? location that once seemed perfect, or something else. You can avoid pitfalls like these, however, by sidestepping a traditional retail location such as a strip mall and opening your restaurant as a portable pop-up eatery instead.
One of the biggest advantages that pop-up restaurant ideas have over conventional brick-and-mortar commercial locations is that they give you the option of relocating your business if you picked the wrong retail space or the consumer market around your restaurant changes. Another benefit is that a mobile pop-up is normally less expensive to customize to your exact standards than it is to build a permanent structure.

Community Busines,Shipping Container Caf? Turns Out the Tunes
Bubbling over with creativity and artisanal entrepreneurial activity, Brooklyn has long been New York City?s leading hipster hub.
This tradition continues with the recent arrival of The Lot Radio in an abandoned triangular lot in Greenpoint, at the edge of Williamsburg.
Founded by French photographer Francois Vaxelaire, The Lot Radio is essentially a popup shipping container caf? that also houses an independent radio station
The unassuming structure is made from a recycled shipping container divided in half.
One half of the container is set up as an audio booth while the other half functions as a simple kiosk counter, offering drinks, coffee and pastries.
From early in the morning to late at night, The Lot hosts a diverse array of local DJs and performers via livestream.
The church across the road donated several old wooden pews for outdoor seating and the surrounding yard is decorated with quirky paraphernalia, such as mannequin parts, garden gnomes and lawn flamingos.
When the unusual triangular lot became available for lease, Vaxelaire recognised its potential immediately.
In an interview with Gothamist, he said, ?It?s magic. It?s a triangle, you have no neighbours, you have a view of New York City; it?s atypical.?
In a rapidly gentrifying neighbourhood where towering condos and high-end retailers have snapped up most prime waterfront real estate in recent years, The Lot Radio offers a reassuring makeshift homage to the neighbourhood?s edgy, industrial past.
Awesome,Pizza Joint Tops Off Interior Design with Shipping Containers
Known worldwide for its hip restaurant scene and coffee culture, Melbourne was one of the first cities to arrive at the container design party.
The city boasts a growing number of shipping container bars, cafes and pop-up stores.
Not only are Melbourne?s coolest new commercial ventures being housed in converted shipping containers; interior designers are also putting the abandoned cargo vessels to good use.
In the hip, industrial, inner-city suburb of Collingwood, the owners of new pizza restaurant, Rupert on Rupert, have used a recycled shipping container to encase the bar area inside their Melbourne warehouse locale.
The brightly painted bar extends along the full length of one of the interior walls of the premises. The deep marine blue finish on the bar?s container fa?ade recalls the shipping container?s former life at sea.
But instead of the stacked pallets of export cargo that once filled the container, its contents now include a fine selection of imported wines and liquors.
Though you?d never guess it from the unassuming storefront, Rupert on Rupert can hold more than 500 patrons.
The loft-style pizza joint was conceived by Ric Corinaldi, who once co-directed local firm Ficus Constructions.
Known about town for their transformational retail and restaurant fit-outs, Ficus Constructions is behind some of the city?s most show-stopping commercial spaces.
Corinaldi now turns his industrial interior flair to the pizza game. Nestled in a quiet laneway in the backstreets of Collingwood, Rupert on Rupert cuts a slice of Manhattan cool into the streets of Melbourne.
