I would wager that most people would consider the metal, musty, dark, and industrial impression they have of shipping containers tough to overcome when considering it their very own shipping container home. However, some respect must be given to the fact that these containers are largely recyclable and are as tough as any mobile home or RV. But, as you peruse the pictures below what you will see is with the right design and materials it can become some of the more luxury accommodations you may have enjoyed while on the road.
One of the toughest issues that any RV or in this case shipping container home designer faces is the issue of width. The industries answer is of course the pop-out, of which this shipping container home has 8! This shipping container home has the following pop-outs: kitchen, bathroom, bed, desk, sofa, reading nook and closet. When the unit is prepared for transit it only 8 feet wide and 40 feet long. When deployed for living quarters you the pictures show that the living space is nearly doubled.
As you can see in the photos the outside looks much as you would expect with the rugged and corrugated exterior broken up by the occasional window. The paint job makes it less than inconspicuous but also gives it some curb appeal.
The interior is a different story all together. The shipping container home dubbed ? MDU? for Mobile Dwelling Unit is finished top to bottom in a modern and minimalistic design to keep the space comfortable yet functional. It uses the same red color from the exterior as an accent inside the shipping container home. Most of the interior is finished in sleek design of wood or an acrylic red finish.
While you may not run out and build one for yourself this weekend as it may not be the most reasonable solution to mobile living, this shipping container home shows yet again the progress that mobile living professional are making on creating even more thoughtful space saving designs. The cross of form and function on a shipping container home such as this shows that the possibilities for future design could bring some impressive innovations in the years to come.
